The Boys of Chokoloskee present · Gays in the Glades · Halloween weekend 2026
1956: the causeway opens and station wagons roll down to the Glades. It's the golden age of Florida travel, with the Cold War humming in the background. There's a Nike missile site out in the Everglades, radar watching from Marco Island, and the Lavender Scare up in Washington. This Halloween, we're asking one question: what if the fallout actually happened?

7 History
Parkway sits at the end of Highway 29 on Chokoloskee, a shell island built by the Calusa, between Everglades National Park and the Ten Thousand Islands.
Chokoloskee is an ancient Calusa barrier island in one of the least spoiled coastal estuaries in Florida.
Ted Smallwood became the island's postmaster and trader. His 1917 store still stands on pilings at the south end of the island.
Days after a hurricane, a group of island men met Edgar Watson at the Smallwood landing. The legend never left.
The causeway reached the island, and Parkway Village opened as Chokoloskee's first fishing camp.
During the 2020 shutdown, island native Aaron Tabor brought David Ardelean down to fish, boat and breathe.
Aaron and David run Parkway together and gave the old camp a refresh: new furniture, new art, same quiet.

Just up the causeway, the Society is bringing back the 1927 Bank of Everglades, the bank that helped build the Tamiami Trail. When it's done, it becomes the Everglades Area Welcome Center.
